You-jung Choi’s research takes a developmental approach to address questions of how people understand others’ minds and how this understanding plays a role in their social lives. Psychological understanding is a causal explanatory framework that enables people to interpret the behaviors of others and predict their subsequent actions by making inferences about their mental states such as goals, preferences, or true or false beliefs.

To explore how people apply their psychological understanding to navigate the complex social world, I have focused on (1) the development of this understanding by examining infants and (2) how infants and children use their psychological understanding to interpret social interactions in more complex contexts that also involve moral understanding or language comprehension.
